***he Soviets were so barbaric because they were forced to be.
At the early stages of the war, particularly Barbarossa, the Soviet soldier had no animosity towards his German counterpart, and the Germans felt the same.
The Soviet soldier did however, hate Stalin and in the beginning refused to fight for him. The reason for this hatred is two-fold.
One, because the purges of earlier years decimated the military and most of the best leaders were murdered.
Two, because of these same purges, few families in the entire Soviet Union did not suffer the loss of at least one member to Stalin's purges. Stalin's scorched earth policy destroyed many small communities and caused the death of untold thousands of peasants as well.
Stalin's paranoia skyrocketed when the Russian peasants were welcoming the German's in as liberators and he increased the terror.
Thus, the Soviet soldier simply allowed himself to be captured by the Germans to avoid fighting for Stalin.
The problem's set in when the camp system was overwhelmed in a short period and barracks were not constructed.
To combat all of this, Stalin enacted several Stavka Orders which dealt specifically with soviet soldiers surrenduring and being taken prisoner.
Two Orders that stand out the most are Stavka Order 227 and Stavka Order 270.
Essentially what these orders say is that any Soviet soldier taken prisoner will be considered an enemy of the State and subject to death. The same holds true for his family.
There is anothr Stavka order which allows the Soviet soldier to redeem himself by going on foot as the first line of battle, (in front of the tanks)
That is why no Soviet soldiers wanted to be turned back over to the Russians. It meanst death for them and their families. Yet this is exactly what happened by agreement at Yalta. All Soviet POW's were turned back over to Russia while the other Allies simply looked on.
Added to this is the typical soldier being forced to listen tho Ehrenberg's propaganda speeches on a daily basis, you have the makings of a mentally deranged soldier, which is essentially what many Russians became.***
